I have always loved reading, right from being a young child. Being able to escape into a good book is such a wonderful thing. We read to Frugal Toddler every night before he goes to sleep and I am hoping that he will enjoying reading just as much as Mr FC and I do. Inspiring books can change your whole mindset for the better, give the right circumstance.
But, life often gets in the way and by the time I get to bed I struggle to find the motivation to concentrate on reading. But, as self care is a thing I’m focusing on lately, I am trying to get to bed early enough to allow myself at least 10 minutes of quiet, reading time. Frugal Baby is still sleeping in his Snuzpod next to our bed and there’s something very soothing about reading a book with him snoozing next to me.

So, I thought I’d share some of the books I’ve been reading lately and why they’ve been inspiring to me.
#Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso. Sophia founded the retail company Nasty Gal from a small apartment when she was struggling to pay rent and this book goes behind the scenes on that journey. It’s straight forward and simple talking, but it’s inspiring none the less. She has built a multi-million dollar business from her bedroom! I have enjoyed reading this a lot 🙂
Crushing It by Gary Vee. I found Gary in Instagram by accident about a year ago and I love listening to his no nonsense straight talking advice and tips to other people. He doesn’t beat around the bush with his advice! Again, another very successful businessman but this book is so, so good. I haven’t even got half way through this and am loving the motivational advice he gives. If you read one book this summer, make it this one.
The 8 Week Blood Sugar Diet by Michael Mosley. This book was recommended to me by my mother-in-law who is also reading this. A very interesting topic around our eating habits and how the modern day diet is full of [processed] sugar. As someone who definitely feels the 3pm slump and eats far too much sugar, this is a little bit eye opening. In fact, I want to try some aspects of the 8 week diet plan he talks about; the food actually sounds delicious! There is a lot of facts in this book but Michael presents it in a way which is very digestible.
The Danish Way Of Parenting. I have only dipped in and out of this book, but I have enjoyed what I have read so far. I worry so much about bringing up the boys in a way that means they’re happy and healthy. I mean, what parent doesn’t? There are lots of things to take from this book and can easily be adapted to your own lifestyle.
The Little Books of Mindfulness by Patrizia Collard. I purchased this book way back in 2016, then promptly bought another one as a Christmas present for my cousin. A very easy read with lots of practical tips on how to be more mindful and present in everyday life. I look back at this often, especially if I am beginning to feel overwhelmed. If you know anyone who might be feeling stressed at the moment, this little book would be a wonderful gift for them.
Reasons To Stay Alive by Matt Haig. Another recommendation from my mother-in-law, who actually purchased this book for me. A very thought provoking read, again with lots of insightful comments throughout about how depression can affect a person and how to help. I think that everyone should read this book, and it also should be given to teenagers to read as well. I think that teenagers especially would benefit from reading this, to understand their emotions and feelings. A very, very good read.
So there you go; six books I have read lately that have been inspiring. I love reading a book that makes you think, makes you question the norm, makes you want more from your lot. Words have the ability to give you the hope that you can change, the confidence that you are doing okay and the support to have your back when you need it. Nothing beats a good book 🙂
What about you? What have you been reading lately? I’d love to hear some of your recommendations!

I got the little book of mindfulness for Christmas. Started reading it, put it down and never picked it back up. I shall do so now you have reminded me.
My daughter got given a copy of Matt Haig’s book and I am next to read it once she’s finished.
I’ve recently been revisiting Your Money or Your Life as a way to refocus my mind on what I am doing money wise and why. It’s a book I like to dip into every year or two for a refresher.

These all sound interesting – I will have to check them out. I have been reading almost a book a day lately so my library card has had a real workout.
Non fiction – “Paper” by Mark Kerlansky – not just the history of paper as a product but how it has affected and reflected history all around the world – loved it.
Otherwise I’ve been on a real mystery kick – I am currently on book 4 of the Camilla Lackberg series, book 3 of Kelley Armstrong’s “City of the Lost” series and tonight I picked up Peter May’s “Runaways”. I have also put a hold on the first 3 books of Cara Black’s series that takes place in Paris. When I find an author who sounds interesting I have to start at the beginning and work my way through all their books so the library saves me a lot of money and bookshelf space!
