Weekends are a time for slowing down, savouring the time available and spending time with loved ones. There was a time where I thought weekends were all about spending money, going out and wasting the hours. I used to spend a fortune by just going into town on a Saturday, wandering about the shops and buying things I didn’t need. Although, that being said, this was definitely before the kids arrived 😉
I didn’t appreciate the freedom the weekend brings.
Now, the weekends consist of relaxed, family time. Mr FC works on Saturdays so it’s just me and the boys. Then, Sunday is a day when we’re all together 🙂 we often don’t do anything special, just spending time together. Once the weather gets a bit warmer, we’ll be outside more.
Here are 5 free things to do at the weekend:
1) Read a book. Support your local library and get some books out. I love reading and although I don’t get a chance to read as often as I’d like anymore, it’s still a free activity to do! I’m currently reading The No Spend Year and I recommend it as a money related book 🙂
2) Go for a walk/bike ride. Explore the outside space near your home and get some exercise at the same time. This can be tricky with children, though not impossible! I went out for a walk with Frugal Baby yesterday with him in this carrier and really enjoyed it.
3) Play a game! Cards, Scrabble and Monopoly are our favourites. Although, I always seem to lose at Scrabble so maybe not that. But, again, it’s a fun, free activity you can play at home. I like Monopoly as it involves money, but any board game or card game is good. I can’t wait until Frugal Toddler can start playing games 🙂
4) Have a dance/sing off! Get your best tunes on loud (but not too loud if you’ve got neighbours) and have sing-a-long and a dance. There’s nothing better than blasting out some good music and joining in. Plus, if you dance too, you’re exercising at the same time! Get on YouTube for Music and it’s all good. Feel free to share some song suggestions in the comments below! Frugal Toddler loves to break out some funky dance moves, which are hilarious to watch 🙂
5) Find some new, frugal recipes. As a massive food person, I love reading food blogs online and finding new recipe that sound tempting. This will cost whenever you make them, but finding inspirations and looking through blogs with recipes on is free. At the moment I am spending time looking for Slimming World recipes and there are so many!
6) Visit friends and family. This costs in the sense of using petrol to get there – if you can walk there, then great! – but it is a good time to see those closest to you. Just popping round for a cuppa and a chat can do wonders for morale.
7) Do free events in your local area. Some times there are events put on in your local town which are completely free. Keep an eye out on Facebook or other social media accounts to take advantage of this.
8) Go to the park. We are lucky to live by a couple of really nice parks with play areas in. Often, these can be quite quiet during the day, until the kids get out of school. It can be nice to have a walk around when the weather is warmer. Plus, it doesn’t cost anything!
Lots of free things to do on the weekend here. Weekends can be a danger point for a lot of people in terms of spending, but hopefully this has given you some ideas on things to do that won’t cost you anything!
What else would you include? I’d love to hear from you in the comments!

These are great ideas! We recently got into board games and puzzles. You’d be shocked at what games you can find at the thrift store on the cheap.
