Hello January! The start of a new year always brings renewed hope and promise. I love not knowing where the year is going to take us. January should be relatively quiet for The Frugal Cottage household. Well, as quiet as it can be with a newborn! It will just us getting used to whatever our new normal is.
January always seems to be a good starting point to get the year off in a positive way. I am hoping that the quiet nature of the month means a positive impact on our finances. We shall see!
Financial aims for January:
– Have 18 No Spend Days (NSDs)
– Overpay our mortgage by £85
– Put £700 into savings
NSDs seem to be very elusive at the moment. I completely failed my 2017 challenge for these. However, I am so determined to get back on the NSD wagon. This still gives me 13 spend days during January. Surely I can do that?! Continuing with plodding along with mortgage payments, though I am aiming for an even smaller number. This is because I want to continue building my investments and dividend income. The savings aim is less than previous months but that is because we’re now on a reduced income whilst I’m on maternity leave.
Personal Aims For January:
– lose 6lbs
– to not put too much pressure on myself
– start to get rid of some of my clothes
Starting as I mean to go on, I’d like to lose some weight each month. I’m going to try and stop snacking in between meals as I’m sure that’ll help. I also need to remember to not put too much pressure on myself – lack of sleep plus juggling a newborn and an energetic toddler is enough without adding more things to the mix. Lastly, I am going to have a proper sort out of all of my clothes, and begin to sell/donate/throw out as I downsize my wardrobe. I am going to be documenting this.
Here’s to January and the start of 2018 being great! What are your aims for the month? I’d love to hear them!

Not sure if I said this before, but congrats on the little one! I’m sure it’s not easy at all juggling the two kiddos, either. Don’t be too hard on yourself. 🙂
This month I’m continuing my efforts to live healthier, including regular exercise and better eating habits.
Hi Nicola, good luck! My goal is to save money to work partime. I love your blog with great tips. Thank you.
