It seems so strange to already be writing the number 2020; surely that’s waaaay ahead in the future!? It feels that way. But, I’m already looking ahead to the new year. Plus it’s a new decade so it seems doubly important to be looking ahead. I don’t know why! I always like to think about what I’m going to aim for in a new year, and with the end of 2019 seemingly approaching more and more quickly, it seems like a good time to start to look ahead to 2020.
If you’re not new around here, then you’ll know that I set myself both yearly and monthly goals. The reason for that is to try and keep myself on track. The goals mean that I stay motivated. In theory, anyway! So I have been thinking about what I want to achieve in the next twelve months.
Firstly, I have been thinking about my financial goals for the year. I do the following financial goals:
- a savings target. This is normally a stretch goal that I’d like to achieve but it might be tough. Always aim high!
- a mortgage overpayment goal. As our early retirement goal includes mortgage freedom, this has to be on here.
- a No Spend Days target. These haven’t actually gone to plan in 2019 but I like to aim for a number overall.
- an extra income target. So, from working online to selling stuff around the home. It all goes into the ER pot.
- a dividend income target. I think I’m going to be widely optimistic with this one in 2020, but it needs to grow!
I already have some numbers in mind but need to look more closely as to whether they are viable or not. The savings target is always one which can prove hit or miss; if I succeed in the extra income target then this will help this but not always. The mortgage overpayment goal has been there since the day we got our mortgage. And the others are self explanatory 🙂 so, the first section for these 2020 goals is beginning to take shape.
The next set of goals I need to think about are my personal goals. Things that relate to me personally and have nothing to do with monetary values or indeed my online presence. I think that 2020 will have something about getting my health back. I have really let this slide during 2019 and it needs to have a turning point. It is having an impact on every area of my life now, so I need to make this a priority. Whether I like it or not!
Then finally, I have my business goals. Things that relate to this space of the internet and all that goes with that – social media, YouTube, VA and Social Media Management work and everything else in between. I know that I haven’t had the time or energy I would have liked to accomplish my mega to do list this year, so some things are going to be rolled in the 2020 aims one. If only there were more hours in the day and I got more sleep! That will come soon, I hope. In this area there are things like:
- growing my social media followers
- growing my page views
- ideas relating to online income
I have LOTS of ideas in this one for 2020, which is perhaps the one I’m most excited about. I just need time to implement them! I’ve already spoke about the fact I’m writing a beginner’s investing course which I am SO excited to share with you. Lots more to come here, I hope!
So yes, looking ahead to 2020. Are you thinking about any aims you might want to achieve next year? It think it’s so important to start thinking about it. A new year means a fresh start. People are often more enthusiastic at the start of the year – I know I am!
Let me know what you’re thinking about – I’d love to hear from you!

Hi Nicola,
We are starting our new build in 2020. This has been the major focus of our lives over the last number of years as we intend to build our home on savings alone. We are by no means top earners, however we have been thoughtful with our money and it has grown through time and patience! I enjoy reading your blog as it has helped me keep focused on my goal to be debt free.
